The first 60% of this book is kids fare.
The Witch Apprentices getting back together and updating themselves on what’s going on. The last 30% of the book is where all the action is where they start solving things.
This book is beast read after I think Doremi # where you have all the gangs introduced. However it wasn’t that hard to follow if you didn’t
The translator did a nice job too, adding in snippets for who’s talking as apparently you infer who’s talking by how they speak, which doesn’t translate well into English...

The first 60% of this book is kids fare.
This book should be read AFTER the entire manga.
This book despite being 268 pages long is actually a fast read because…
It’s double spaced.
I shit you not. And ViZ wanted $15 for this originally.
I will admit I’m only familiar with the anime, however even so I was able to follow along with the story. Which means the main story is that banal that everything makes sense without 90% of it, or that you really don’t need these stories for anything.
The stories themselves are varied. One thing you get a note of is that there is a LOT of incest going on in the manga. Literal brother and sister pairings.
That being said, White Lily’s story was probably the second worst as the whole beginning is making a joke of her feelings...Read More
This book isn’t good. I was told it was “Space Opera” but this is more like “Military Space Adventure”. Think Star Trek but with more guns death and jargon.
Did I mention the jargon. If you aren’t into the military, or care about how big people’s guns are then this book will loose you quick with it’s “Falcon-Three-Three to Falcon-Two-One” and stuff like that which takes of pages and pages and offering nothing to the plot at all.
It’s also very noisy. Everything usually has about five hundred words to describe what’s happened and most of this jargon is all pseudosciency that also adds nothing to the plot and muddies the image of what really going on.
Finally let’s talk about the misogyny bec...Read More
So we start off with kidnapping and raping Tomoyuki and spend the rest of the book with him telling Aswil he wants to go home and this is somehow “romantic”. Finally at the crux of the book Tomoyuki totally forgets how he’s been abused and the outcome has them mining up Africa for oil.
I give it another star only because Tomoyuki actually DOES like Aswil, only he just wants Aswil to listen to him and treat him like a human being. Also in the outcome they have nice consenual sex for once. That still doesn’t forgive the fact the book is 90% “Stop doing that and let me go home.”
Also “Arabian” and “Exotic” get used a lot in this book.Read More
It takes 90% of the book to meander over trivial daily life stuff with very little actual plot going on then just dumps it all right at the end of the book. With literal info dumping in the last few pages.
The characters are typical and stale and of course all the women are put into their places if they aren’t meek to begin with. How many times does Emilia fall down, trip or is otherwise rendered helpless, then further embarrassed and humiliated. A lot.
The final ending is just garbage with Lucifer and really it just seemed pointless and not very funny at all.
So I picked up this book because it’s sequel came up as “Books like Red Queen” and I wanted to read the first book so the second one made sense. And yes you need to read the first to understand the second.
This book has a lot going for it, strong main character and strong female secondary characters. There is next to no girl hate in here and what is there is regulated to a few lines on one part of the book. The only drawback to this is the amount of violent woman death. Thankfully two are dead before the story starts, Seraphina’s mother and Lars’ mother. Another dies due to being poisoned. While the death of men remains low, one is stabbed, two are beheaded. One before the story.
So what about diversity...Read More
The best book for the worst in YA!
Only it really failed to be THE WORST after my recent read. I honestly was liking the book as I was reading it and it got touching in parts. The end climax however got silly in parts with the repetition of words. However overall it’s a good “worst” book. It could have been more horrible in parts, so that was very lacking. I mean if you are going to be racist, don’t half-ass it. The misogyny was almost non-existant. We had Epistola that was the promiscuous scorned woman and Andi was the insignificant female to her might man man. Past that however I didn’t see enough girl hate, super blatant racism, nor horrible domestic abuse that is “sooo romantic”.
Still it was an enjoyable read and it c...
So for that most part this book plays out like a shounen story. Each leader is super smart and powerful and knows how to out maneuver the regulars only with space ships and armadas. Only a shounen story told more intelligently and without 99% of the misogyny.
Don’t get me wrong. Tanaka’s views are rutted in the past, with the men doing everything and being the heirs of everything. However looking at some of his other works. it looks like maybe his views evolved over time since this was written in the 80s. Even then the women in this book usually have agency, like Greenhill, Windsor and an upcoming character...Read More
